Quando estava em Pencey, morava na ala Ossenburger nos dormitórios novos. Era só para os do penúltimo ano e para finalistas. Eu era do penúltimo ano. O meu colega de quarto era finalista. Tinham posto àquilo o nome de Ossenburger, por causa de um tipo que tinha andado em Pencey. Tinha feito uma data de massa no negócio das agências funerárias depois de ter saído de Pencey. O que ele fez foi começar por todo o país com aqueles serviços funerários em que se consegue enterrar os membros de uma família inteira por cerca de cinco dólares a peça. Haviam de ver o velho Ossenburger. Às tantas, o que ele fazia era enfiá-los a todos num saco e depois atirá-los ao rio. Seja como for, doou a Pencey um monte de massa e então eles deram o nome dele àquela ala. No primeiro jogo de futebol do ano, apareceu no colégio na merda daquele Cadillac enorme, e nós tivemos todos de nos levantar na bancada e dar-lhe uma «locomotiva», que é uma aclamação. Depois, na manhã seguinte, na capela, fez um discurso que durou umas dez horas. Arrancou com umas cinquenta piadas foleiras, só para nos mostrar o tipo porreiro que ele era. Uma coisa que só visto. Depois desatou a contar-nos porque é que nunca se envergonhava, quando se via metido em qualquer problema ou assim, de ajoelhar e de rezar a Deus. Dizia que devíamos rezar sempre a Deus – falar com Ele e tudo – onde quer que estivéssemos. Dizia que devíamos pensar em Jesus como um compincha e tudo. E disse que ele estava sempre a falar com Jesus. Mesmo quando ia a guiar. Aquela deu cabo de mim. Estou mesmo a ver o armante daquele cabrão a meter a primeira e a pedir que arranjasse maneira de mais uns quantos esticarem o pernil.
